Tallow Face Cream: Benefits, How to Use It, and What to Look For

Applying whipped tallow face cream to the face

Tallow face cream is a moisturizer made mainly from rendered beef tallow, usually softened with a plant oil and whipped until light enough to spread easily on the face. It has become a favorite for people with dry, tight or easily irritated skin who want fewer ingredients and a cream that does not disappear from their face an hour after applying it.

Below: what tallow face cream actually does, how it compares to a regular moisturizer, how to use it on your face without feeling greasy, and what to check before you buy one.

What is tallow face cream?

Tallow is purified beef fat, made by slowly melting and filtering suet. A tallow face cream takes that fat and adjusts it for facial skin:

  • Softer texture: a little liquid oil (olive, jojoba) is added so it spreads without tugging.
  • Whipped: air is beaten in so it feels lighter and melts on contact.
  • Gentler extras: usually little or no fragrance, sometimes soothing ingredients like calendula or honey.

Tallow face cream benefits

  • Long-lasting moisture. Tallow is an emollient and a light occlusive: it softens skin and slows water loss. Applied over damp skin, it helps keep hydration in for hours, which is why people with dry skin notice it most.
  • Familiar fats for your skin. Tallow is rich in oleic, palmitic and stearic acids, fatty acids also present in the skin's own oils. That is why it often absorbs better than people expect.
  • Comfort for tight, flaky or weather-beaten skin. Wind, cold and indoor heating strip skin of its oils; a rich cream helps it feel comfortable again.
  • A short ingredient list. No water means no need for emulsifiers or preservatives. Fewer ingredients can mean fewer chances of irritation.
  • One product, several jobs. The same jar can be your night cream, eye-area balm (tap, don't rub), lip balm and hand cream.

To be clear about what it is not: tallow face cream is a moisturizer, not a treatment for acne, eczema or rosacea. Many people with these conditions like how it feels, but if you have a skin condition, check with a dermatologist. For a balanced view, see 10 beef tallow skincare myths.

Tallow face cream vs. regular moisturizer

Tallow face cream Typical lotion or cream
Main base Animal fat + plant oil Water + oils + emulsifiers
Preservatives Not needed (no water) Required
Feel Rich, melts on contact Light, absorbs fast
Best for Dry, tight, weather-exposed skin Most skin types, oily skin
Amount needed Very little More per use

Many people use both: a light hydrating serum or lotion first, then a thin layer of tallow on top to seal it in.

How to use tallow face cream (without looking greasy)

  1. Cleanse and leave your skin slightly damp. Tallow works best as a seal over water, not on bone-dry skin.
  2. Use less than you think. Start with an amount the size of a grain of rice for the whole face.
  3. Warm it first. Rub it between your fingertips for a few seconds until it turns clear.
  4. Press, don't rub. Press it into cheeks, forehead and chin, then smooth lightly.
  5. Night first. Start as a night cream. If your skin loves it, try a thinner layer in the morning under sunscreen. See how to layer tallow with sunscreen.

If your face still looks shiny after 10 to 15 minutes, you used too much. Blot gently with a tissue and use less next time.

Is tallow face cream good for your skin type?

  • Dry and mature skin: usually the best match.
  • Sensitive skin: often a good fit if the cream is unscented. Patch-test first.
  • Combination skin: use it on dry areas (cheeks), lightly or not at all on the T-zone.
  • Oily or acne-prone skin: proceed with care. Some people do well, others break out. Try it on a small area for a week. Read will beef tallow clog your pores? and can beef tallow help with acne?

Patch test: apply a small amount along your jawline once a day for 5 to 7 days before using it all over your face.

How to choose a good tallow face cream: 6 things to check

  1. Grass-fed tallow with a clearly stated source. Brands should be able to tell you where their tallow comes from.
  2. Tallow is the first ingredient. Otherwise you are mostly paying for other oils.
  3. Fragrance-free or very lightly scented. Essential oils are a common cause of irritation on the face.
  4. A whipped or soft texture. Hard balms are great for heels but tug on facial skin.
  5. No strong beefy smell. A clean, faint scent means the tallow was properly purified.
  6. Fair price per ounce. Jar sizes vary widely. Here is how to compare tallow prices.
