Tallow vs. Cocoa Butter: Rich Body Butters Compared

Tallow and cocoa butter are both rich, solid-at-room-temperature fats used to soften very dry skin. Cocoa butter is plant-based, brittle, and smells of chocolate unless refined; tallow is animal-based and usually milder in scent. Both are heavy, and neither has been shown to beat the other. Studies have not shown that cocoa butter prevents stretch marks, despite popular claims.

Both feel luxurious on dry hands and body, and both are sold as "natural." Here is what actually separates them.

What They Share

Both are made mostly of fatty acids such as stearic and oleic acid, and both work as occlusives that help hold moisture in. Both are heavy compared with a lotion.

Where They Differ

  • Values and diet. Cocoa butter is plant-based. Tallow is not.
  • Texture. Pure cocoa butter is hard and usually needs blending with oils to spread well. Tallow, especially whipped, spreads more easily.
  • Scent. Some people love the chocolate scent, others find it strong.
  • Claims. Cocoa butter is often marketed for stretch marks. Studies haven't shown it prevents them, so treat it as a moisturizer.

Pores and Sensitive Skin

Dermatologists quoted by Scripps Health note tallow can clog pores, and cocoa butter is also widely described as heavy. If your skin is oily or acne-prone, be careful with either one on the face, and patch test first.

How to Choose

  1. Do you avoid animal products? Choose cocoa butter or another plant butter.
  2. Do you dislike a chocolate scent? Consider refined cocoa butter or tallow.
  3. Do you prefer a soft, spreadable texture? Look for a whipped product. See tallow balm vs. whipped tallow.

FAQ

Is cocoa butter better than tallow?

Neither is proven better. Choose by source, scent, texture, and how your skin reacts.

Does cocoa butter prevent stretch marks?

Studies haven't shown that it does. It can keep skin feeling soft.

Can I use both?

Some people do, on different areas. Introduce one at a time and patch test each.

To try a whipped tallow, see Whipped Beef Tallow for Skin Grass Fed by Natural Skin Tallow. It contains honey and calendula, so skip it or check with your doctor if you're allergic to bee products, pollen, or plants in the daisy family.
